The physical mechanics, spatial efficiency, and foraging boundaries of a colony depend on resource availability and distance. While bees are physically capable of long flights, they operate on a strict energy-budget system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of a colony&#8217;s daily foraging occurs within 0.5 to 1.5 miles of the apiary. If a premium nectar source, like a blooming field of clover or a collective of sourwood trees, is close by, bees will rarely fly farther than necessary to fill their honey stomachs. Interestingly, bees generally ignore flowers located within 100 feet of their own hive entrance, as their flight trajectories carry them up, out, and away from this immediate perimeter. When local resources dry up during a summer dearth, the foraging boundary expands dramatically. Scout bees will fly up to 8 miles away to locate food. Because a radius expands exponentially into an area, a bee colony commands an immense amount of territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 1-mile radius gives the bees access to roughly 2,000 acres of forage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2-mile radius expands their territory to over 8,000 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 3-mile radius opens more than 18,000 acres of potential food sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bees prioritize their flight distances differently depending on what they are harvesting. Bees will travel much farther for nectar because it provides the immediate carbohydrates needed to fuel their flight muscles. Bees prefer to find pollen closer to home (usually within 1 mile). Pollen is heavy, creates significant aerodynamic drag when packed into the corbiculae (pollen baskets) on their hind legs, and does not provide an immediate fuel source for the flight back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To establish a satellite map with an exact 3-mile radius circle around a specific location, the industry standard is to use Google My Maps (a free browser-based tool) combined with a radius-generation tool. The 3-mile circle will instantly appear on your map.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at the very bottom of the left-hand menu panel and click <strong>Base map<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>Satellite<\/strong> thumbnail from the grid. While they offer wide-open green spaces, traditional golf courses present two major threats to honeybees: chemical exposure and lack of food. In recent years, the golf industry has pushed toward environmental stewardship, transforming some courses into surprising assets for local beekeepers. Perfectly manicured turf grass offers zero nectar or pollen for a honeybee. Regular mowing schedules also clip away low-lying weeds like dandelions and clover before they can bloom. From a bee&#8217;s perspective, a standard golf course is a massive, sterile food desert. The Cumberland Cove Golf Course property is 124.30 acres, claims to practice all-natural stewardship, and is buffered by almost a mile of dense forest and vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An 18,095.57-acre forest in Tennessee does not automatically produce honey on its own.
